Growing Tips
- Sow seeds directly in the garden in early spring or fall when soil temperatures are between 45 and 65 degrees F. Spinach bolts in summer heat.
- Plant seeds about 1/2 inch deep and 2 inches apart in rows 12 to 18 inches apart. Thin seedlings to 4 to 6 inches apart as they grow.
- Spinach prefers fertile, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.5 to 7.0. Keep soil consistently moist.
- Begin harvesting outer leaves once the plant has 6 or more leaves. Avoid cutting the central growing point to extend the harvest period.
- For hydroponic growing, use a nutrient solution formulated for leafy greens and maintain water temperatures below 70 degrees F to discourage bolting.
